Maryland Girls wrestling series

Growing girls wrestling is important and we are proud to do our part! The Maryland Girls Wrestling Series was created to provide additional opportunities for our novice and intermediate female wrestlers where they can compete against other girls in girls-only tournaments.

ABOUT the maryland girls wrestling series

We want to grow girls wrestling! The Maryland Girls Wrestling Series aims to provide a positive, competitive girls-only wrestling experience for beginner to intermediate female wrestlers throughout the state. These girls-only events will run concurrently with a Future Champions event to ensure that there is the maximum mat opportunity for our young female athletes. In short, we are launching this series because we want to support our girls!

What if there aren’t enough girls?
The State of Maryland is looking to encourage more girls to get on the mat and to compete against other girls. Some regions have more participation from female athletes than others which is why we are going to host these events on days that also have Future Champion events. In the case that some weight classes do not fill up completely, you may choose to move your female athlete to the co-ed Futures brackets, or you may double register them (girls-only and co-ed) for no extra cost.

Coaches

  • Coaches and parents receive free entry for every MSWA event when they provide a State ID and USAW Leader Card at the door! This includes the Maryland Girls Wrestling Series, Future Champions, the Futures Finale, Regional Championships, and the MSWA State Championship.

  • Only USAW Wrestling certified coaches with active Leader Cards are permitted to be in the corner at MSWA State Championships events, both of which have girls-only brackets. Leader cards may take up to two weeks to become active, so we encourage coaches to do this early in the season.

Modified NFHS Rules
Tournaments follow National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS) scoring rules with USA Wrestling modifications, including:

  • Headgear: Mandatory for all competitors.

  • Mouthguards: Mandatory for wrestlers with braces.

  • Rest Period: Minimum of 15 minutes between matches.

  • Matches cannot begin without a coach present.

  • The three-quarter nelson with leg hook is legal in USAW Folkstyle events.

  • The double arm bar with sit-out is considered potentially dangerous and the official will stop the action.

  • USA Wrestling age, weight, and match-time rules take precedence where applicable.
